Morning 🌞
How are you going 😊?
Did you watch the game on the weekend – Go 🦁’s
I just have a quick question if you don’t mind?
Can you tell me where the budget documents are saved😜?
OR
Hey
How are you?
Can you tell me where the budget documents are saved?
What approach is going to light you up and render you compelled to help them out? Why do you feel that way? What emotions are triggered when reading those two approaches? Essentially there are three factors at play, highlighted in the comparison.
1. The use of emojis is powerful, they can soften a request, invoke enthusiasm and convey an emotion 😡 just be careful which emotion you are trying to convey 😱
2. The first approach makes the conversation about the recipient not the sender, there is a sense that the sender genuinely cares about the recipient and isn’t just asking for something
3. The first approach the sender is taking the time to create the connection, talk about something that they are both interested and in the process getting what they require
When working remotely we need to take the time to reinforce connection in regularly. In the office you would take the time to have a bit of small talk with your colleague you had not spoken to that day, before you got into asking for help. Not only is it polite it makes your day a bit more interesting. The same applies when working remotely, whether it be in another office location or from home.
An instant message often serves to interrupt the day of the recipient and it may convey to the recipient that the sender is only interested in getting things off their desk with little regard to the needs or workload of the recipient depending on the way it is delivered. As in all communication, instant messages are a much more effective tool when you attempt to create a personal connection through it.
OMG this budget is driving me crazy 🤦🏽
Where did you find the salary costs puhlease🙏🏽?
Here is the link to the shared drive
Thanks so much you’re a super🌟
No worries👍🏽
With so many methods of communication and so much to be achieved in any day we should be cognisant of demanding too much of our work colleagues especially things that are urgent and need to be attended to immediately but a friendly emoji can turn a nuisance into a reasonable request. This serves to get the recipient on side to want to give the information as soon as possible and as a bonus, it brings a smile to their face.
Victoria University Wellington professor of linguistics Miriam Meyerhoff agrees that emoji’s can serve by creating connection, she said that language was changing as digital technology became more prevalent.
"Part of keeping a language fresh and alive is innovation. I think that [using emojis] is another example of how we move into mediated communication. People are striving to keep it feeling like it's between human beings."
When working remotely it is easy to feel isolated and we are less aware of the pressures that our colleagues are under. Show compassion, it is easy to get down when the only interaction you are having is attending to other people’s issues and everything is urgent – a smiley face emoji can go a LONG way!
A former work wife and I have actually had entire conversations using nothing but emojis which I realise younger generations do as a matter of course but for those gen X’s and older it is quite difficult to do but you know what…it was also HEAPS of FUN🎉🎊 Maybe you could give it a try with your colleague.
