Engaged Employees are a Business Strategy

Employee Engagement is the unsung hero of business success. According to Gallup engaged teams are 17% more productive and 21% more profitable. When you have a group of highly engaged employees, they will feel connected to each other believe in the company and be dedicated to the cause.

My great uncle used to say look after the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves. I translate this to look after your employees and the business will take care of itself. When employees are:

  1. Interested in the work that they are doing

  2. Connected to those they are working with

  3. Committed to achieving the vision

They consider the organisation as their business. The three pillars to employee engagement are covered and the business is benefiting. So it is simple, engaged employees will lift your business to new heights but how do you engage them. A starting point is to structure the businesses such that the leaders have time to be fully present with their team. If the leaders need to get involved in all the detail, they will not be invested in every conversation that they are having because they are thinking about the next thing that they need to do. Employees feel valued when their leader is genuinely invested in their success.

Actively create opportunities for teams members to connect, it may just be having communal areas near the kitchen where they can share a coffee or more structured team lunches or “bonding” events these can also be achieved when working remotely, it may just require a bit of creativity. Get clear about the vision and don’t keep it a secret, be loud and proud and ensure that everyone knows where they are headed and why. They will work together to help everyone achieve their goal but when the goal is a secret no one will get there.

The power engaged employees can make to a business is immeasurable they will not want to leave and will encourage other high performers to join them. They will work together to go further; they give the discretional effort that will ultimately set your organisation apart from the competitors. Find out what makes your people tick and then give them what they need to thrive.
