Why should I care about clarity:
Clarity in communication is important to get your point across to the other party effectively.
Clarity in leadership is important so others understand what they are expected to achieve.
Mental clarity is important to remove distractions by all the other “shiny things” going on in your brain.
When I was living and working in Peru, I learned that “claro” means right or correct. There is so much to be gained from clarity yet we rarely take the time to ensure that we have it. The ancient yogis knew its importance, the practise of yoga is about slowing down and and stopping the mind racing. When we have many thoughts in our brain, we are distracted, and get less done. When we are in a state of anxiety, one of the symptoms is an inability to focus. Clarity allows focus and enables us to get more done, quicker.
In his book, Indistractable: How to Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life, Nir Eyal investigates the role that social media and technology in general, play in keeping our mind jumbled and at the mercy of the devices. In order to be indistractable, we need to reduce our addiction to devices that are causing clarity to remain far from reach. There is evidence to suggest that starting your day by looking at your phone will set you up for a day of chasing your tail and achieving very little.
Starting the day with exercise, meditation and journaling will increase your clarity and understanding of what you want to achieve and why. When you slow down the mind and try to limit the amount of information cascading through it, we allow our brains to be better equipped to tick things off your to do list. This premise can be expanded to achieving long-term goals, you are a lot more likely to write and work towards achieving your goals when you have spent time getting clarity on what you want and why. Replace checking your phone first thing in the morning with 10 minutes of journaling and checking in on your goals to improve your attention to the task at hand and long-term achievement.
To achieve what you desire in your career, clarity is the cornerstone from which you leverage your journey. It is the first thing we attend to in my career coaching packages.
